Hello and welcome to May’s beauty trash! A fairly fruitful month this time, with makeup, skincare, shower, and wax empties. Let’s get stuck in!
I finally finished my Bourjois Radiance Reveal Healthy Mix Foundation – I’m the shade Light Vanilla. I really love the fresh, fruity scents of Bourjois foundations, and the finish of this is medium coverage with a slight sheen. I always set with powder and setting spray, but this lasted well on my skin throughout the day. I preferred the finish of the Bourjois Air Mat (which I finished a while ago) to this, and probably wouldn’t buy it again soon because there are lots of other foundations I want to try.
I also finished a sample of the Lancome Teint Idole Ultra Wear Foundation in 010 – impressively, this lasted quite a few uses. I really liked the colour, coverage and finish of this foundation, but the lasting power was less than impressive. The majority of it had dissolved on my face by the end of the day. I did scrape out the bottle to get the last bit though!
I gave up on this AliExpress Konjac Sponge and cracked open a new one – they’re so cheap (50-90p) I always have a stash, so I’m not fussed about changing them. These are essential in my skincare routine for gentle exfoliation – they work fabulously with foaming cleansers! I’ve already ordered a load more after discovering my stash was running low.
Sadly this Primark Pro Mini Latex-Free Blending Sponge started going mouldy (you can see the little black dots on it). This does happen eventually with most of my sponges so I take it as a sign to replace them. I don’t think Primark stock these any more, and they can be a little fiddly to use, but they’re brilliant for blending small areas – like undereye concealer.
I used up the last of this L’Oréal Nutri-Oil for Nails & Cuticles – annoyingly the brush didn’t reach right to the bottom so I had to pour the last few dribbles out. I really liked the formula though! My cuticles are missing it already…
I became totally obsessed with this sample of the ESPA Optimal Body TriSerum – it smelled amazing! It’s a dry oil which you spritz onto your skin and massage in. It’s super luxurious and my skin drank it up – it also kept my skin hydrated for much longer than some of the other lotions I’ve been using. However it’s £39.00 for 100ml, so cheapskate me will probably be putting it on the Christmas list 😉
I’m a bit of a noob when it comes to high end skincare, but I really enjoyed the Lancome Advanced Génifique Youth Activating Concentrate. It’s a more watery texture, like a thick essence, and was soothing and non-irritating. The sample lasted quite a long time too.
I ordered the Natio Rosewater and Camomile Gentle Skin Toner from Amazon, simply because I needed a toner and it was pretty cheap. It surprised me by being very gentle, refreshing and soothing on the skin. I also enjoyed the gentle camomile scent (not a big fan of rose but I couldn’t really smell any). I’d definitely buy it again and am considering trying more products from the brand!
Can we just have a moment of appreciation for the fact I finally finished my Nivea Lip Butter in Caramel Cream? I must have had this for almost 5 years (kinda gross but still an achievement) and really like the smell, but prefer using it at night as it’s quite thick. It’s more on the waxy side though so I’ll be trying something else next!
Another staple for me is the Macadamia Oil Extract Foot Pack – I get horribly dry, scratchy feet and these really help. This type has been my favourite so far.
I’d not seen this Beautifully Scrumptious Deep Moisturising Foot Pack with Honey and Almond before so I thought I’d give that a go. It was pretty good actually – I’d buy it again over some of the other foot packs I’ve tried. I just love how convenient these are, and that you can go about your business while wearing them with no problems!
I stopped using wipes on my face regularly about 3 years ago but I still use them for removing swatches – the B. Pure Sensitive Micellar Cleansing Wipes are fab for this. I did use them to take my makeup off a couple of times and they did irritate my skin slightly, but my face is spoiled by nightly oil cleanses! I’ve still got some more packs to use as they came free with a Superdrug online order.
This was my last Dermactin-TS Pore Refining Facial Sheet Mask – I have to say this is really good for (admittedly temporarily) tightening my pores. It comes in two parts which makes it slightly easier to apply, but I’d definitely get this mask again if I saw them for an affordable price, I really like them!
I knew I’d had the Lovea Nature Hair Mask for Dry Hair for a long time, but when I looked back I realised I’d bought it as part of a Primark haul in August 2015 😱 Was it worth keeping it for that long? It was perfectly nice, but did nothing noticeably amazing for my hair. I’m glad I used it, but I’ve discovered that I’m not really a hair mask person!
Is it an empties post if it doesn’t have both the Primark P.S. Love This Oval Cosmetic Pads and the Arm & Hammer Extra White Care Toothpaste? I go through at least one of each every month – the toothpaste is really good and not overpoweringly minty (I’m not a huge fan of strong minty toothpaste) and the cotton pads are the cheapest I’ve found. Great staples!
The Body Shop Smoky Poppy Shower Gel is another old one – I remember using this in Rome when we visited for my 22nd birthday in 2015! A well traveled shower gel indeed… Anyway, this is a black shower gel with a strong, deep musky scent – very luxurious on the skin, although it doesn’t really lather up (not always a bad thing). I don’t know if they stock this line any more as it was reduced when I bought it – but I still have the perfume which I really enjoy wearing. Very rock’n’roll in my opinion – makes me feel like a grungy but still feminine rock star!
My favourite scent from the line, the Garnier Ultimate Blends Shampoo Delicate Oat with Rice Cream & Oat Milk is a very delicate, light creamy scent and I’ll repurchase this over and over again! Lathers up really well and does a great job at cleansing my hair.
The Garnier Ultimate Blends Conditioner Honey Treasures with Royal Jelly, Honey and Propolis was a totally acceptable conditioner but I can’t remember the smell at all – so it clearly didn’t make a lasting impression on me. Might be time to try some new conditioners!
I can’t seem to find the Primark P.S. Love This Make-up Brush Cleanser in store at the moment – which is a real shame as it’s a fantastic affordable brush cleaner. I really need to find a new favourite, as all mine are being discontinued!
We were clearing out a messy spot in our bedroom when we found a stash of bath bombs I’d bought my boyfriend for Christmas in 2015 (he was into taking baths at the time). Since he’d never used them, he donated them to me, and the first one I used was the Lush Avobath Bath Bomb.
It made the water a bright green and smelled really refreshing and lovely – I enjoyed a very relaxing bath! I don’t take baths very often because my bath is too short for me to lie in properly – a bit sad considering I’m only 5’6″. 😥
I usually buy men’s razors because I find them to be cheaper, and frankly much better than ones marketed to women. I picked up this Cien Men Shark 5-Blade Razor in Lidl for £3.99 and it’s honestly the best one I’ve used for ages! It gives a really smooth shave with no irritation. I’ll be popping back to get the replacement heads soon – also only £3.99 for 4 sets.
I’ve been using a few products from this range recently, and the Lee Stafford Dry Shampoo Original for Oily Roots didn’t disappoint. I use dry shampoo every other day and I know what I like – this didn’t leave white powder in my hair, soaked up the excess oil and gave me a bit of volume too. Very good! I have a full size in my stash and I’m looking forward to cracking into that.
The Redken All Soft Conditioner was a freebie from a work conference I went to (I never expected to get haircare freebies at a further education conference but here we are) and it was okay, but didn’t blow my mind. This little tube had enough for two applications.
This Emily Victoria Candles Cranberry, Orange & Cinnamon Wax Melt was super fruity and Christmassy – my favourite types of scents, and I melt them all year round! I really enjoyed it, and like all melts from this brand, it had a decent throw that lasted over several days (melting a few hours at a time).
I found the Yankee Candle Gingerbread Maple Wax Melt in my local brand of Poundland! I couldn’t believe my luck – I’m obsessed with anything gingerbread, so of course I bought two! This is a lovely scent – quite strong and sweet, a little gingery and a little mapley. If you like sweet bakery scents you’ll like this, but it’s also one of those scents that might bring on a headache if you’re sensitive to them. I really like it though!
Cupcake Chasm Mojito Cake was a little fresh, a little minty, a little sweet. I like her ideas for scent combinations, but this one could have been a little stronger in my opinion.
Cupcake Chasm Mince Pie is from a discontinued line, but was still very nice – a buttery, spicy, sweet Christmas inspired scent. I do like the melts from this brand, I just find the scent doesn’t seem to last as long or throw as far as some of the others I’ve tried.
Emily Victoria Candles Mistletoe Kisses is another Christmassy scent (surprise surprise) – this is more of a frosty, fresh scent, reminiscent of pine trees. It reminds me of the smell of going to pick out my Christmas tree! A perfect one to melt while decorating your tree… Obviously I melted it in May, because Christmas is too good to just stay in December 😉
Millie’s Melts Frosted Pumpkin was so sweet! It was a little too sweet for me personally. I don’t know why I keep buying pumpkin scents when I know I don’t actually like pumpkin… They just sound so good? Anyway this smelled exactly like the description I just wasn’t a fan (totally my own fault for ordering pumpkin).
Millie’s Melts Fabric Softener smelt great on cold sniff, but once melted, smelled a bit too artificial for me. It did smell exactly like fabric softener though – not something I would have picked (it was a free sample) but if you’re into your house smelling super clean, you’d probably love this.
May’s empties total is:
Hooray! That’s one every day! Looks like we’re on target for my goal of 365 for the year. Check back next month when I’ll be counting up how many products I’ve used in the past 6 months… Will I be on track?
