Did I just post a review of something on launch day? I know, I can’t quite believe it either. Read on to find out what I thought of these newbies from affordable makeup brand Revolution Beauty…

The Products

There are 6 shades in the range – Copper, Green, Gold, Brown, Burgundy and Black – which all retail for £5 each. I think this is a good starting point shade wise but I’m interested to see if they add any new shades going forward – I feel like this formula would translate really well to a silver, a steely blue, and a pink, as well as sheer white shadows with pastel duochromes like purple, pink, and blue.

These striking little pots are essentially tubs of loose eyeshadow which have built-in magnets in the pots – that’s what gives the shadow it’s distinctive design. Once you dunk your brush in it, you can make the shadow return to it’s original shape by gently tapping it on a hard surface until the contents lies flat again. It’s gimmicky at first glance – but I won’t deny, it’s really neat! It also makes the shadow less messy and harder to spill, which is usually a problem with loose shadows..!

These are really reminiscent of similar eyeshadows that MAC brought out a few years ago – although that was a while before I got heavily into makeup so I never had a chance to try those!

How to use

Like many loose or pigment shadows, these will perform best over a sticky base. These feel like they have a low percentage of binder – binder is what makes an eyeshadow stick to the skin, and high pigment shadows often don’t have much of it. If you apply eyeshadow with little binder to bare skin, it tends to move around, go a bit dusty and be a bit underwhelming. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing – I have a bunch of other shadows I love that perform in that exact way – it just means these are best to use as a ‘pop’ of colour, used as a last step by patting over a sticky base, rather than something you can blend all over your eye and go. For the best colour payoff, I would recommend either a thicker, opaque sticky base (like MAC Paint Pots, Maybelline Color Tattoos, or P Louise Rumour Base) or a glitter glue (ELF and NYX both make a glitter glue). In my swatches, I used the Maybelline Color Tattoo in Creme De Rose as a base.

Shade descriptions

Gold – a true gold with a ton of golden glitter (this is definitely the sparkliest of the lot)
Green – a mid green with green shimmer
Burgundy – grey-brown with a dark red undertone and some shimmer
Purple – grey-brown with purple undertone and some shimmer
Black – a dark charcoal grey with a ton of teal blue shimmer
Copper – a dark orange/mid-toned red with copper shimmer

My picks

My favourite out of all of these is the shade Black – it’s really unique and like nothing else in my collection. I’m also really looking forward to using the Green shade in a look, as it’s also pretty unique to my collection – I’ve got the new Melt Gemini Palette on it’s way to me right now and I think they would pair together fantastically! I do really like the Gold shade too, but it’s easily duped if you have a large collection like me!
